DREAM Leaders: Samantha Janosick (sjm8@buffalo.edu) and Karrie Mietz (karriemi@buffalo.edu).
Over the past two years, we have been working with the G.I.R.L.S. (Goals, Integrity, Respect, Leadership, and Sports) Sports Foundation in Buffalo. The G.I.R.L.S. Sports Foundation (GSF) seeks to mentor underprivileged girls ages 4-18. The mission statement of GSF is to "promote the importance of academic achievement, respect, self-confidence, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, and good sportsmanship through sports participation and mentoring among underserved girls."
The DREAM Program assists the Foundation with life skill activities to empower and inspire the girls to improve their attitudes and behaviors and reach their goals. With the incorporation of monthly themes, the girls have focused on a new topic every month such as self-esteem, being grateful, and giving back. Through crafts and discussion the girls have fostered new ideas about themselves, the people in their lives, and how to play a positive role in the community!
This year, we are looking for activity facilitators and people willing to demonstrate a non-traditional sport to the girls. We will be specifically addressing the topics of self-esteem, teamwork, confidence, integrity, and bullying.
If you are interested in volunteering or want to know more, please email Samantha Janosick at sjm8@buffalo.edu.
