Become a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor Details:As of July 2009, the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS) has approved selected courses in the School’s MSW curriculum to fulfill the 350-Hour Certificate Program requirement as part of the process to become a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). The MSW degree also credits graduates with 4000 of the 6000 training hours needed as part of the certification process. This new program is being administered by the School’s Office of Continuing Education. Students interested in becoming a CASAC will work with their advisor to select the courses needed to meet the 350 hour requirement. Upon graduation, submission of their transcript to the Office of Continuing Education verifies the applicable courses have been taken. A certificate of completion of the 350 hour CASAC training program will then be issued to them so that they may pursue application of this credential with NYS OASAS. This change is applicable to previous MSW graduates as well as current students and new graduates. While many social workers become LMSW’s and LCSW’s, graduates need to be aware that addiction agencies have requirements for how many CASAC’s they need on staff. For those interested in working with people who have addictions, obtaining the NYS OASAS CASAC credential can make a difference in getting the job you desire.
