Enhancing Communication and Collaboration Between Behavioral Health Providers and Insurance Companies

Add this training to my calendar (Outlook 2003: Note)

Location: UB Center for Tomorrow, Flint & Maple, Amherst, NY
Hours: 3
CEUs: 0.3
Credit Hours: 0

Overview: This workshop is for clinicians in private practice, human service agency and hospital staff involved with obtaining insurance approvals for behavioral health services. Content will focus on how to have productive interactions with health insurance companies for the benefit of clients, and learning how decisions are made by health insurance companies on what behavioral health services they will approve for payment. Knowledge gained will assist in effective treatment planning working within a client’s defined health insurance benefits. While at times it may seem to behavioral health providers that a health insurance provider’s main objective is to limit a client’s access to services, in the long run the health insurance provider does not benefit from its members having untreated symptoms resulting in worsening conditions and potentially needing higher levels of care. In essence, behavioral health providers and health insurance providers are on the same team of promoting wellness. Time will be available during the presentation for questions. Learning objectives: • Recognize the roles in communication, collaboration and advocacy behavioral health professionals play within health insurance provision; • Review how the interplay of an employer’s choices, an individual’s choices, federal and state law and regulation determine health insurance benefits; • Understand the health insurance company decision making process regarding the coverage of a requested services; • Improve skills in communication and advocacy with health insurance providers for the needs of clients.
