The parallel careers of Torris and Nancy-Mautone Smith affect the lives of millions of Americans. Their path together began as they worked toward their MSW degrees at UB, marrying during their studies.
After rising to captains in the U.S. Air Force as military social workers, the couple was approved for an interservice transfer to the commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service. Their current duties with the USPHS in San Francisco cover four states and six Pacific jurisdictions.
Nancy is a regional program consultant for Title X Office of Family Planning, helping low-income couples determine freely the number and spacing of their children to ensure an optimal health outcome for all. Torris is associate regional administrator at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
“UB really prepared me very well for policy implementation,” Nancy says. “We make a huge impact on how health care is shaped and how it fulfills Americans’ needs,” adds Torris.
