Talk about a dream deferred. Marie Roth had a desire to go into social work since high school, but, as she puts it, “life took over and you can’t always go in the direction that you choose.” After twenty-two years in banking, Marie took a downsizing lemon and made lemonade of it, going back to school and realizing her first desire.
She is now a program supervisor and therapist, working with children with mental health concerns between the ages of three and eighteen. “The children are from diverse populations, with ADHD diagnoses, bi-polar, different types of abuse or violence backgrounds, the whole spectrum,” she says. “The challenge is not only the broad age range and the different ways to work with them on their developmental levels, but you also have to work with the extended families. It’s very challenging.”
Marie says that the MSW program provided a supportive foundation to walk down any social work path. “But it’s definitely only a beginning,” she says. “The learning experience continues from the moment you walk into your new employer.”
